What Are The Symptoms And Treatments Of ADHD?

Who are the victims of ADHD?

Children (boys in particular) and teens are the most common sufferers. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common mental disorder characterized by hyperactive / impulsive behavior and problems paying attention.

Symptoms of ADHD:

The symptoms vary among individuals, but a combination of the following patterns can be noticed:

  • Carelessness
  • Overactivity
  • Emotional instability
  • Lack of patience

In Toddlers and preschoolers:

It is very difficult to identify ADHD in toddlers and preschoolers. As we all know, kids are usually active, but ADHD kids are "one-step ahead". They are always running, jumping, climbing and easily distracted. They are much more likely than other kids to struggle getting to sleep or even listen to a short bedtime story.

In school-going children:

Not all hyperactive children have ADHD. You can identify them with symptoms like lack of attention towards studies, inability to plan their school day, specific learning difficulties, not following instructions and failing to finish school works. Those kids are very emotional and sensitive when it comes to keeping promises. For instance, if you promise you will take them for a family night out but the plan goes wrong along the way, your child may have a serious outburst of anger.

In adults:

The usual hyperactive behavior of ADHD children fades away with age. But the other symptoms continue to create problems in their life. Their impact can be destructive for couples with an ADHD partner and statistics show the divorce rate is twice as high for people who are not bothered to do anything about it. Here are some common patterns of behavior:

  • Being messy and disorganized
  • Unable to pay attention to discussions or issues
  • Unable to complete daily chores
  • Misplacing common items and becoming too frustrated searching for them
  • Can not engage in healthy sexual relationships
  • Being quick tempered and restless
  • Having a hard time coping with some aspects on the job

Once diagnosed, you will finally have an explanation of the problems you have faced since childhood. Proper treatment and regular medical care will help you come out of it.

What Are The Treatments For ADHD?

The combination of medications, psychological and behavioral therapies have proved to be the most effective treatment method. If the parents manage to learn certain techniques from their therapists, it would also be beneficial for the kids to overcome those symptoms easier.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is not an incurable condition! There are many people who have overcome it and what is more — we have seen ADHD sufferers becoming happy and successful individuals. It is important to never ignore the symptoms and to consult your doctor for an accurate diagnosis.
